My Cold Weather Essentials

From living in the mountains for four years during college I developed a new love for the cold weather. Not only for the time of year, but for the fun clothing and accessory options as well! Over the years I noticed I had a plethora of certain items that were clearly essentials during the cold weather months!

cold weather
1. Fur Vests: Yes. 110%. (Faux) Fur vests can do no wrong in my book. They add a little sass (or warmth) to every outfit! If you are looking for a fur vest, I found two great ones at my Dillard's store and one from Michael Kors (pictured).

2. Boots: Whether it is raining/snowing and you need to pull out the Hunter boots or you're going more for a casual and put together look, boots will be your answer! I live in my boots from about October to March! Which is also my excuse to buy more!

3. Booties: They are a new found love of mine. At first I was unsure of this trend, but then I dove.....and fell hard. Booties are my newest obsession. They are warm, chic, and stylish! I may have to go on a bootie shopping ban..... seriously, I just can't get enough!

4. Infinity Scarves: I'm not sure why I am partial to the infinity scarf, but I am! I think it's because it looks more put together and yet it's still cute. Regardless, I have quite a few- and they're necessities in my book. Recently, Bre showed me how to make a regular scarf into an infinity scarf and that may be my next project! It was so simple!

5. Oversized Sweaters: Nothing screams fall to me more than a good oversized sweater. In the fall and winter I tend to dress for comfort (not for men or anyone else) so oversized sweaters are perfect for me!

6. Colored Cords: I loved when colored denim was on trend this summer and fall, but I think I am even more so in love with colored cords. I can look cute while still being warm....? Perfect in my book!

I hope you find these items are all essential for you as well!

Thanksgiving Weekend Recap

What a crazy, but fun few days it has been! I have been going, going, going non-stop since last Wednesday afternoon! It doesn't look like life will slow down any time soon, but I'm ok with that! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday as much as I did. Mine was spent baking, eating, and relaxing with family and friends! I was thrilled that my Pumpkin Spice Cake turned out as well as it did last year! Needless to say it was gone in one day.

On Friday I steered clear from any and all shopping....except for one big purchase! We bought my new bed for my apartment! This was my first time purchasing a new mattress, and let me tell y'all, it was really hard to decide! But I think I made a great decision and can't wait to it to be delivered in two days. Afterwards Brian and I were Charlotte bound for the Bobcats game and some fun with friends!

We ended up being on the seventh row, so it was definitely a fun game! Afterwards we went out in Charlotte with new and old friends. Saturday was spent being a little lazy, grabbing dinner with our group of friends, and drinking wine with Bre (and celebrating her engagement....hello, that's something to drink to!!)

After such a fun-filled weekend I am ready to relax! But, I have more exciting things coming up! I get the keys to my very own "big girl" apartment today! I have been packing and anticipating this moment for a while. So, if I'm behind on blogging, you'll understand why.....and send out an SOS for me because I may very well be drowned in clothes, shoes, blankets, and kitchen stuff! :)

Monday Mantra

Happy Monday, ladies!
I hope you all had a fabulous weekend.
This quote should certainly bring a smile to your face this morning!

Today I am Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I am thankful every day, but today I am especially grateful for all of the wonderful things I have in my life! I couldn't ask for a better family, boyfriend, group of friends, and supporters of everything I do!

Take some time today to thank those around you for everything they do!

Thanksgiving Food Favorites

With Thanksgiving a mere day away there are so many things I am excited about and many more things that I am extremely thankful for. One of my favorite parts about Thanksgiving is being able to be surrounded by the people that I love. I am so thankful for my family and everything they do for me every day. Being able to share that with them makes Thanksgiving even more special. But let's be honest here, I am overly excited about the Thanksgiving food we will be cooking and enjoying as well! I have a few Thanksgiving favorites that are always required in our household for Thanksgiving or I might throw a fit. Seeing as I am no chef it is a feat that I a) have recipes for these b) can actually make these 100% on my own. GO ME!!!

Sweet Potato Casserole
I am a sweet potato lover through and through! Add some more sweet marshmellows to it and you've won me over! This may just win the spot for my favorite Thanksgiving side....along with the fact that it's simple to make!
Here's what you'll need...
- 5-6 sweet potatos, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinammon
- 3 tablespoons orange juice
- 1 package of miniature marshmellows
Set the oven to 350 degrees
Once you have boiled the sweet potatos for approximately 15 minutes, drain the water. Once this is done mash in the butter, brown sugar, cinammon, and orange juice. Be sure it is all mixed in together. Then, spread it evenly into a greased pan (we use 9x13). Top it with marshmellows. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes (or until the marshmellows are golden brown).
Pumpkin Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
Let it be known that I love anything and everything pumpkin. So, when I saw this recipe on pinterest I knew I had to add this to our Thanksgiving menu. No ifs, ands, or buts about it! I made it for the first time last year and it was a huge hit with my family! it was the perfect after dinner dessert.
Here's what you'll need.....
- 1 package of plain spice cake mix
- 1 package of vanilla instant pudding
- 1 cup pumpkin (I just buy the canned pumpkin)
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon ground cinammon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- Cream cheese icing (I bought vs. making it last year!)
set oven to 350 degrees.
Place the cake mix, pudding mix, pumpkin, oil, water, eggs, cinnamon, and ginger in a large mixing bowl. Blend with an electric mixer on high speed for two minutes.  The batter should look thick and well blended. Pour the batter into a lightly greased pan and let it bake for 32-35 mintues.  Once the cake has cooled frost with cream cheese frosting.

Green Beans with Vinaigrette
Now I will be the first to tell you I'm not the biggest fan of greens...of any kind, but I love crispy french green beans! These are a great green side for Thanksgiving.

Here's what you'll need.....

- 2lbs. french green beans with the stems cut
- 2 tablsespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon of coarse salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

You will need to steam the green beans for approximately 8 minutes, then place in ice water to cool. While they are cooling mix all of the other ingredients together in a bowl. Once the green beans are cooled pour the mixture over the beans. I eat mine warm, so I heat mine before serving.

Those are some of my favortie (and easy) Thanksgiving recipes! If you're still looking for that extra side dish or dessert I highly recommend these to you!
Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving!

Monday Mantra

Happy Monday, everyone! Although it is Monday I am excited because it is a short work week for me! I think Walt Whitman was on to something when he spoke these words. I think we all should keep this in mind! Casting judgement on others and situations is so easy to do, however, we should be curious before we decide to be critical! :-)

Friday Five

Today I am wishing my mom the happiest of birthdays!! I am so thankful to have such a great relationship with my mom. She is one of the best and most loyal friends I have ever, and will ever have! I know I wouldn't be half the woman I was without her love, advice, and occasional punishment! ;-)

I have officially decided on a "theme" for my room for my apartment!! With my apartment being only one bedroom, I kind of wanted everything to flow from room to room pretty well. So, I went with black furniture, silver/grey colors and lighter tones to brighten the rooms! I picked out my bedding, sheets, curtains, and shower curtain yesterday. This made me all the more anxious to move in!
This is the bedding I decided on.... it's simple, but not boring! I can always change out the sheets and throw pillows to mix it up! What do you think?

I cannot believe Thanksgiving is in less than one week. Seriously, where did the time go? It seems like just last week we were meal planning for our Thanksgiving meal. None the less, I am beyond excited to eat the delicious food that is served on Thanksgiving! I have to admit, it is one of my favorite holidays. Food, family, friends....and a lot to be thankful for!

I get to see this guy in t-minus three and a half days....which in my opinion is still too far away! I can't wait to spend more than just a weekend with him. But, what I am most excited about is being able to spend the holiday with him and his family as well! yay!

I am excited to announce that one of you lucky ladies are the winner of the Sloane Ranger giveaway! Was it you???

Congrats to Meg Cady! I will be emailing you shortly about your tote!
I hope you all have a great Friday and a fabulous weekend!

Pinterest Apartment Inspiration

The countdown is officially on... less than two weeks and I will have the keys to my apartment! To say I am excited would be an understatement! Aside from the fact that I still have to finish re-painting my furniture, organize, buy items, and the daunting task of packing everything I am so ready! With a place to start "fresh" in, I have taken a brand new liking to Pinterest. All of those bedroom, bathroom, and organization pins can now be put to use! woohoo!

I am going to be moving right after Thanksgiving, so I will get to have my first Christmas in my apartment! I can't wait to print off cute Christmas printables and decorate for Christmas.

For one of my first projects I want to create a gallery photo wall. I have a lot of sentimental photos and photos that I have taken that I would love to showcase somehow. I love the look of gallery walls and think this would be a realistic project!

One thing I really love about moving to a new place is being able to organize everything. I am a little OCD when it comes to organizing stuff (especially for the first time in a new place). I can't wait until everything has a home. Although, let's be honest....my organization will NEVER look as good as these pinterest photos do, but it's fun to pretend!

I also can't wait to try more DIY items!

That's all I've got for today!

One Top, Three Ways

ASOS always has me lusting over their bold printed tops, peplum, and sequins. I love a good printed top. I think they are so fun, different and can be styled many ways. I had my eye on this top a few months ago and it must have slipped my mind because I didn't scoop it up. Well, now it is on sale and I am thinking it is a must have after styling it three ways.

one top three ways
The oxblood skinnies and bag boost that color in the top.

The jeans and the booties make for a more casual look.

The leather pants combined with the top definitely make a statement.

What do you think?

One of my favorite quotes from a song, ever!
Have a great Monday, everyone & don't forget to enter my Sloane Ranger giveaway!

Friday Five

Happy Friday, everyone! I have always looked forward to the weekends, but now that I have a "real world" job I look forward to the weekends so much more! I am ready for it to be 5 p.m. on the dot so I can go to Charlotte and visit some of my favorite people! I am ready to have some fun!
I am a jean snob. I will fully admit it. There is nothing quite like a great fitting pair of jeans that are great quality that I know will last. With that being said, I have recently (the last few months) found jeans that I love....at a cheap price. I am obsessed with the Old Navy Rock Star denim and I can't get enough of it! I know many bloggers will agree. Not only do they come in multiple colors of denim, but they also have colored denim and now cords for fall. With their great price point I don't feel near as guilty for having five pairs of colored denim! ;-) I highly reccomend them!

If you follow me on twitter this will not be news to you....
(yes this required all caps....I'm that excited!!)
Now we can all plan our fake weddings, family and babies in peace...because let's be honest we all go on "pinning sprees" and feel a little embarrassed that we pinned 50 wedding pins....with no plans to get married anytime soon!! They should be rolling out the secret boards ASAP. Only set back?? They may not be around after the holidays, so don't go too crazy pinning on them just yet!
I am linking up for Friday Fancies... this is one of my favorite link-ups. I always love blog hopping to see what outfit every other blogger chose for the occasion. The occasion this week is spending an evening around a bonfire (which I suggested to AMV!)

I am loving booties this fall. All different colors and types. A day or so ago an IG and twitter friend (@sweettaddict) posted a picture with the cutest wedge booties and I knew I immediately had to have them!  I rushed to my local Target and low and behold they had my size left (I thank the heavens I am a small size 5 1/2 shoe!!!) I can't wait to wear them this weekend!
Last but not least.... I have turned in to a Diet Coke lover. Yes, that's right. After years and years (and years) of being a loyal Coke lover I have made the switch to Diet Coke. This is a big deal because a) I hate all diet drinks (loathe them actually) b) there are 0 calories. I no longer have to feel quite so guilty for drinking a soda now! yippeee
Have a great Friday, lovlies!

Blog Input Needed!

I have been blogging for a while now at Life with Emily. Over the years my blog has evolved and changed in many ways. It is so funny to look back on old posts and see what I thought was important to blog about (and some of the stuff really just makes me laugh...or cry!!) While I am not the biggest fan of change, I know that it is sometimes needed in order to find your niche.
My blog went from strictly lifestyle posts, to strictly product and fashion related posts, and now I would like to think I have a good mixture of lifestyle and fun posts. But, I need your help!
This is where you wonderful readers come in!! My blog is used to not only keep a journal of sorts about my life, but also to make blog friends and engage with my readers!
So I want to know your thoughts! I would love it if you could fill out this short survey to help me out! :-)
Thank you!

Happy Monday, friends!

Friday Five

My friends, it is finally starting to feel like fall! While I always look forward to summer, fall might just be my favorite season. I love the comfort of fall. I am all about leggings, oversized sweaters and jackets. Those are fall staples in my wardrobe! I did live in the mountains for four years after all, so give me a break on my love of cold weather!

Starbucks red holiday cups are back!!! I am over joyed by this. It makes my pumpkin spice latte that much more delightful in the mornings! It's the little things that can always make my day...or morning in this case!

I will have the keys to my apartment in 25 days!!!! While I still have to refinish/repaint my furniture (more on that later), pack, and buy stuff I am so excited to be out on my own! Pinterest has become my best decorating advisor and I can't wait to put some of my pins to action!

I love the idea of two shower curtains. It just looks so clean!
*who knows if I will actually like it in person!*

I have been on the search for a great work tote. One that can hold all of my junk work supplies but also still looks trendy! I've had my eye on this Gigi New York Teddie bag for a while so I may just have to bite the bullet!
And the eggplant color is TDF!
Tuckernuck graciously sent me some seriously awesome booties last week and I can not wait to get them on and style them! How great are these?!?!? And so perfect for fall!

What I Wore: Rockin' the Red

When it comes to cold weather I am all about comfort, while still looking put together. I'm talking big comfy sweaters, riding boots, ponte pants, cords, the works! If I have to be shaking in my boots I want to at least look cute! Lately I have had the best luck with finding good, comfortable sweaters! While in Las Vegas last week I hit the H&M jack pot. It was the 3-story H&M in Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace....talk about fashion heaven. Oh, and did I mention knits and sweaters were buy one get one free??? Well that's where I found this little gem.

Meet my perfect red sweater.

I had been waiting so impatiently (and secretly praying) for cold weather so I could break out this oversized sweater! The weather gods answered my prayers this week when temperatures dropped into the 40s! woohoo! I got so many compliments when I wore this outfit. I loved the fact that it was ridiculously simple and comfortable!
