October 2016 Reading List

One of my favorite things to do is to read, but I’m sure you all know that by now! To me, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book. I have always enjoyed reading & I make sure that I make time to read. Sometimes I’ll read a few chapters before bed, sometimes I’ll get a few pages in over lunch, and other times I’ll read while taking a bath. No matter what, I make sure I read (even if only a few pages a day) because it really does make me happy. This month I was able to read a lot of books. More than most months. In total I read 8 books (a few aren’t shown because they were read on my iPad.)

Truth or Die by James Patterson | I’ll preface this by saying this is not typically a book that I would choose but I decided to read it while I was at the beach with my parents. My mom is a big reader (I get it from my momma haha!) and she read this book quickly, so I decided to give it a read. It definitely fit in with the thriller type of books that I’ve been reading recently. A journalists boyfriend gets tied up in a story that his girlfriend was working on before she was killed over a lead. You follow Trevor Mann (boyfriend) as he dives into her story to figure out who killed her and why. What he doesn’t realize is he is made the number one target for secrets he finds out along the way. It wasn’t the best book ever, but it definitely kept my attention & was a page turner.

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica is a must-read for anyone that liked The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. It’s a fast paced page-turner that will surprise you to the very last page. Mia, the main character, is the child of a wealthy seemingly perfect family. One night at a bar she decides to flirt with a guy, hoping for a one-night stand. A drunken one-night stand takes a turn for the worse and a night she will never forget. I don’t want to give anything away, so I won’t say more… but it’s a good one!

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena | This may have been my favorite book that I read this month. This page turner really got me thinking… there are always people who you think have it all. The best relationship, the best life, the best kid; but the saying, “the grass is always greener” rings true, especially in this novel. The couple next door is not always what you think and this couple is hiding quite a few secrets.

All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda is a really good book, but there are a few things I wish I had known beforehand.  This book details a missing girls case from day 15 back to day 1 of her going missing, so it reads backwards. I started reading this book while I was really busy and wasn’t able to read every single day. I wish I had read this book when I had more time to dedicate to it because this book does require some thinking and focus. Since it reads backwards, some parts don’t make full sense when you’re reading them- but the pieces start to add up as the days go on. With that being, said… if you know that going into it you’re going to love this book! Just remember to focus on the details as they’re being handed to you because you’ll want to remember them as you get deeper into the book.

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty | I will admit this was not my favorite book. In fact, I felt like it was a chore to finish this book (and I always have to finish a book!) I really like Liane Moriarty as an author and typically enjoy her books, so I was upset that her new one was not up to par with her others. The book details the lives of three couples and their kids, all family friends. They’re all together for a party one night and something goes horribly wrong. The book leaves you hanging about what this “horrible” incident is until about 50% into the book and once you figure out the incident everyone has been up in arms about it kind of makes you eye roll. For the way it was dragged out, I was honestly thinking it would be something bigger! I will say, I love her writing and the fact that she really does set the scene and characters up nicely. The characters are very “real” in this book, I just had a hard time relating to them for much of the book.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware was one of the best books I read this month! Ruth Ware is a newer author (this is only her second book) but this book is gripping from the start. The main character, Lo, is a travel journalist who is assigned to stay on a small luxury cruise ship for a week and detail her stay in her magazine. Sounds like she’s living the dream, right? Unfortunately things go south quickly on the boat when Lo is witness to a crazy event (I won’t say to avoid spoilers!) that happens upon the ship. No one aboard seems to believe her and as you turn the pages you may wonder yourself if she is actually crazy! The book ends in quite the twist that you won’t see coming. Needless to say I cannot wait for her to come out with another book! P.S. it’s not pictured because a friend is borrowing it right now! 

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty was one of my favorite books by her. I read this on the go on my iPad and it was such a quick, easy read. A lot of her books always make me think  “how would I react in this situation” or  “what would I do if this happened” and I like that about her books! In this book Alice is a woman who is nearing 40- until she hits her head, wakes up in the hospital and is stuck thinking she is 29. Naturally with over 10 years going by, things aren’t how they should be. Throughout the book Alice is trying to piece together her life and figure out what has happened over the last 10 years. Some pages I felt myself sympathizing with Alice, while others had me hoping she would never remember certain parts of her life!

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin was another book I read on my iPad. Emily Giffin is one of my favorite authors. Every time she releases a new book, I immediately purchase and read from cover to cover in record time! If you have a sister, you’ll enjoy it as this book details the relationship of two sisters who are both at different points in their lives. Both sisters are coping with a family tragedy in  different ways and struggle to keep their bond as they find out secrets and learn lessons the hard way.
