A look back at 2019 & Goals for 2020

Can you believe we are halfway through the first month of 2020? So far this month has been a bit of a whirlwind between traveling, trying to get back to a normal schedule & a slew of other things going on! At the beginning of each year I like to take a few moments to reflect back on the previous year and set goals for the year ahead.

2019 was such a milestone year, both personally and professionally. At the beginning of the year I made a list of 9 things I wanted to accomplish. For the most part I accomplished a majority of those goals. When I wrote that post I had absolutely no idea what this year would bring but looking back, everything seemed to fall into place when the time was right and I couldn’t be more thankful for that! The word for the year seemed to be change… and this year brought on a lot of change! It’s amazing all that can happen in twelve short months!

Two of the biggest parts of the year included purchasing our first home in June and adding our sweet golden retriever, Avett, to our family in July! Both of these were big, big changes that required some sacrifice, but we wouldn’t have it any other way! Owning a home and having a puppy definitely shifted our priorities this year, but it’s been so nice to make changes to our home on the weekends and make new memories with our family of four. In October we celebrated two years of marriage & we ended the year with a trip to Aruba! Lots of fun things happened in 12 months but this year had some bad moments too. There were many tears shed, there were a lot of stressful days, and things I’m still working through. However, as always, I try to remember the good that came from it all. I’m really looking forward to 2020 and I can’t wait to see what this next year and new decade brings for us!

2020 goals I would like to accomplish

Make progress on my 101 in 1001 list

I created my 101 in 1001 list back at the beginning of June and I’m really looking forward to crossing some more items off of the list this year! It’s been about seven months since creating the list and so far I’m happy with the progress! I shared my first update in August, but I’ll be sharing an update on everything I have accomplished so far in a blog post in February!

Spend less time scrolling & more time being present

It’s been my goal now for a few years to disconnect from my phone more. Each year I improve and make progress on this and this year I want to disconnect from my phone even more. Sure, a big chunk of my job involves me being on my phone, but this year I want to be smarter about my time on my phone that way it’s easier for me to put it away and not feel “guilty” about it.

Continue to make reading a priority

I cannot put into words how much better (and less stressed!) I feel when I make reading a priority. Reading is one of my favorite forms of self-care and it’s something that I make time for each day. My 2020 goal is to read 75 books. This year I want to focus more on the quality of books vs. the quantity of books that I read. I have started off the year strong with some great reads and I hope that continues throughout the year! I also want to diversify my reading even more this year by adding in more non-fiction and literary fiction to my list!

Get more organized

How is it that things can get chaotic so quickly?! When we moved into our home last June we knew we would need to implement new storage solutions to get more organized. Our house has a decent amount of storage, but it wasn’t configured well. This past weekend we took a trip to Lowe’s to get supplies to add more shelving to a few of the closets. It’s amazing how just adding a few shelves here and there make a HUGE difference and make things instantly feel more organized! I’m hoping this small step will help jumpstart us staying organized this year. We need to do a big purge and donate or sell items that aren’t being used anymore! I always like starting off the year getting organized… now let’s see if we can keep it that way!

Write more personal, meaningful content

Over the last two years the blogging industry has changed drastically. In 2018 I felt a little “lost” and wasn’t sure the direction I wanted my site to go and it really reflected here. In 2019, I started to trickle in more personal content and less outfit posts. Although outfit posts are part of my “bread and butter” they weren’t fulfilling me any longer. This year I want to add in more personal and lifestyle content. I created Life with Emily in 2011 to share bits of my life and I would like to continue doing so in a way that I see fit! Truthfully, it’s a bit scary to open up your life and share more on the internet, especially when it comes to criticism or judgement. But I think this year is the year I am going to push myself to open up more!

Continue to make updates to our home

We have made some really great progress with our house and I am excited to make more updates to our home this year! We have a lot of things we want to do long-term, but many small updates that we can do in the meantime that will make a big difference!

I would love to hear some of your goals for 2020!
