About Emily

I am a 29-year-old southern girl living in North Carolina with my husband Nick, our cat Charlie, and our golden retriever Avett. I began blogging at Life With Emily during my junior year of college at Appalachian State University in 2011. Life with Emily is the space where I share my personal style in hopes to inspire & help make the task of getting dressed a little easier! My looks are ones that can actually be worn day-to-day and are a mix of high and low end pieces with an emphasis on closet staples.

I started Life with Emily in 2011 as a creative outlet while in college.

After spending countless hours on campus & many more hours studying, I started my blog as a creative outlet to share my day-to-day life while at Appalachian State University. Upon graduating college in 2012, I shifted my content on Life With Emily to focus on my sense of style, and that is where my passion for blogging began. Eight years later I am still blogging about my personal style, my favorite fashion & beauty finds, my travels, and bits and pieces of my life.

One of my favorite parts of blogging has been the friends I have made over the years.

Being self-employed and working from home presents many challenges, one of which is making friends in my industry. I feel incredibly lucky to have made some of my best friends through blogging and social media. Jenn & Kate are two of my very best friends (they were in my wedding!) and we all met online! I met my #bloggersdotravel group 6+ years ago and we have traveled on countless trips together over the last five years! They are all so funny, kind & talented and we always have the best time together! My biggest piece of advice is to befriend people in your industry who “get” what you do!

I married the love of my life on October 28, 2017!

Nick and I have a long history together, all the way back to 2005 when we originally started dating! We dated through high school and part of college from 2005 to 2010 before taking a break. As fate would have it, we reconnected five years later in 2015 & got back together soon after! We got married on October 28, 2017 and it was the best day of our lives (so far!) I love traveling!

Traveling has always been something that I have enjoyed. Whether it’s a quick weekend trip to the coast or a fun vacation getaway, I am ready to pack my bags for a fun adventure! I think there is something to be said about creating memories while traveling and getting to experience and immerse yourself in a different area. A few of my favorite trips have been St. Lucia and spending time in Spain, Italy & France!

I adopted Charlie, a Maine coon-tuxedo cat mix, in 2013 and he has been such a gift to our family!

In 2013 I was picking up my parent’s puppy from our local animal hospital when I spotted a cute 8 week old kitten up for adoption. At the time I wasn’t looking for a pet, but I couldn’t resist his big eyes staring at me. Next thing I know, I was a cat mom to a Maine coon-tuxedo cat mix! I can say without a doubt that adopting Charlie was one of the best decisions I have ever made. He is such a fun, social cat and has been a great addition to our family.

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies & I’m thrilled I get to share that here, too!

Reading is something that I have always enjoyed and it’s something that I consciously make time for even when I am busy. For me, reading is one of my favorite hobbies because it can be done anywhere and I find it to be very relaxing. There’s nothing better than getting sucked into a good book whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, a romance novel or a good thriller. You can see all of my reading lists and book reviews HERE.

How did you start your blog?
I started my blog in 2011 while I was a junior at Appalachian State University. I had been reading blogs for quite a while and finally one day I thought, “why not?” I started Life With Emily having absolutely no clue what I was doing, but used it as a creative outlet to share my day-to-day college life along with all of my favorite fashion and beauty products! Back then, the blogging scene was so different, so it’s been a lot of trial-and-error as the blogging world has continued to change and evolve.

What did you study in school?
I went to Appalachian State University and received my Bachelor’s degree in Communication with a focus on Public Relations. My minor was sociology. I interned for a PR agency, a few non-profit organizations, and in a radio station’s event department while in college.

Who takes your photos?
My husband Nick takes almost all of the photos for my blog. I will occasionally use a professional photographer for certain projects, but for the most part it’s my husband or younger sister, Logan, behind the lens!

Help! I want to start a blog but have no idea where to begin. Can you give me some advice?
This is one question that floods my inbox constantly and I always love taking the time to answer it! My biggest piece of advice: Go for it! My blog began as a hobby and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I suggest starting one and coming up with a game plan, a vision of what you want. Having a vision of what you want for your blog is a force that will allow you to focus on your content, your goals, and your audience! I will say it is not a fast process; I always tell people who want to start a blog to be patient. It won’t happen overnight and it will be a lot of trial-and-error of figuring out what works and what doesn’t, but that’s the fun in it!
